Incorporating the WIM Data into the Analysis of Road Traffic Risk

Time-to-collision (TTC) is a commonly used indicator for road traffic safety analysis, but it does not take the load information of vehicles into account. This paper proposes two novel weight- and TTC-based risk indicators-WRT and WIT, integrating the load information for the road traffic risk analysis. The loading characteristics are indexed by both the average loading and the overloading rate. The relationships between the loading characteristics and the traffic risk are investigated. The empirical weigh-in-motion (WIM) data from Chinese freeways are used for the investigations. The results show that the novel weight- and TTC-based approach gains better insight into the traffic risk analysis, and the developed traffic risk measure is both intuitively logical and consistent.
