CONTROL LOOP PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

In a modern paper mill controller tuning, process instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting have rather small resources. If staff were supported by suitable tools utilizing information technology, work load as well process variability level would be decreased considerably. A study to find and develop reliable methods and system for assessing the performance of control loops in a paper machine was conducted in the Finnish Pulp and Paper Research Institute. Several methods described in literature were evaluated. From those the normalized control performance index was selected for use. Also some new parameters describing different phenomena in control loop were developed. All the methods were tested by simulation and field test in a paper mill.
