The present invention relates to a device related to hardware in the loop simulation (HILS) for performance evaluation of an image-based man in the loop (MITL) guided missile system, and a control method thereof. According to the present invention, an automatic target designating device for performance evaluation of an image-based MITL system includes: a scenario setting unit setting a generation condition of a target designating command; a data storing unit storing predetermined input data; a calculating unit calculating a pixel value corresponding to a target position on an image coordinate system using the predetermined input data stored in the data storing unit and the generation condition of the target designating command which is set by the scenario setting unit; and a designating command generating unit generating the target designating command based on the pixel value.
