Lactone based systems provide an alternative to current state-of-the-art stabilization for polyolefins. Lactone chemistry was introduced 4 years ago and works as a carbon centered radical scavenger. Due to its high efficency it is the best solution for processing under high temperature or high shear environments. It has successfully been used in the fiber industry and is beginning to be considered as the product of choice in other applications such as film. To gain further insight into the potential of lactone stabilization in film applications Ciba Specialty Chemicals has performed trials on a BOPP pilot plant. The following presentation gives an overview of the data generated from these trials.
