Process comprises applying a polycrystalline CdS film to a preheated substrate, washing and etching this and then applying a Cu2S film. The polycrystalline films are formed on the metal substrate by injecting the Cd or Cu into the reaction chamber as salt soln. and introducing the S as cpd. in gaseous or dissolved liq. form. Suitable Cd and Cu salts are chlorides, nitrates, acetates and/or complexes. The Cu salt soln. contains a Cu (II) and Cu (I) salt in 2:3 molar ratio. The salt solns. are buffered to a definite pH, pref. with an acetate-acetic acid buffer. The S cpd. can be H2S, thiourea, thioacetamide or a thiocarbamate. The cells can be produced continuously.
