Process for the thermochemical edge layer treatment of austenitic steels comprises inserting impurity atoms into the substrate edge layer by contacting the austenitic steel substrate with a molten metal enriched with impurity atoms; and carrying out edge layer modifications. Preferred Features: The edge layer modifications are carried out to improve the surface hardness, and the wear and corrosion resistance. The impurity atoms are made from carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and/or boron. The substrate is partially or completely made from austenitic steel or duplex steel (ferritic-austenitic or martensitic-austnitic).
