Process for the thermochemical edge layer treatment of austenitic steel comprises inserting impurity atoms into the substrate edge layer by contacting with the substrate material in an gas atmosphere enriched with interstitial atoms. Preferred Features: The edge layer modification is carried out in such a way that the surface hardness, the residual stress and the wear and corrosion resistance are increased. The metallic substrate is made partially or completely of martensitic hardenable steel, austenitic steel or duplex steel. The interstitial and/or impurity atoms are made of carbon. The gas atmosphere consists of a carbon dispensing medium.
