PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for rapidly and accurately measuring the characteristics of a wavelength multiplexing optical amplifier by a measuring system, which has a simple constitution.;SOLUTION: The method for measuring the characteristics of a WDM optical amplifier comprises steps of dividing channel numbers into odd number and even number of groups, so that a plurality of signal lights corresponding to respective signal light wavelengths in a wavelength band to be measured of adjacent wavelengths belong, for example to different groups, and regulating the powers of the respective signal lights, so that the total power of the signal lights in the respective groups becomes substantially equal to the preset reference value. The method further comprises the steps of sequentially inputting the WDM signal lights, obtained by multiplexing the signal lights at the respective groups to the amplifier, measuring the spectrum of the light output from the amplifier, and determining the output signal light power and the naturally radiating light power, in respective signal light wavelengths in the wavelength band to be measured, based on the spectrum measured result of each group.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
