The method involves subdividing environment of a vehicle (11) into regions. Cells are allocated to the regions. Sensor data (14) with information about occupancy state of the regions in the environment are detected or received. Evidence information for the cells are determined based on sensor data fusion. The determined evidence information are modified based on contradiction to actually determined evidence information before fusion into modified evidence information, which is used during fusion of portions of the determined evidence information.
