A virtual prepaid or credit card, as a data record, free from a physical substrate, wherein the data are designed to authorize a holder in possession thereof to pay for a product or a service, particularly as part of an online transaction, or to obtain cash, wherein the data record is produced on the basis of a credit card account or a prepayment to a system account and in response to a control signal which is output as the result of a registration procedure by the holder, wherein the data record is available for display and sending on a telecommunication terminal, particularly a mobile telephone, of the registered holder.
