The method involves determining a glow phase-dependent criterion, which describes starting characteristics (S1) of an engine based on a time upto a significant combustion and speed gradients. The criterion is derived for providing a glow phase-dependent measure. Glow temperature (Tgp) of a heater plug of an internal combustion engine is changed using the glow phase-dependent measure. Controlling of the temperature is intervened in an actual glow phase depending on the starting characteristics. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling glow temperature of a heater plug in an internal combustion engine.
