The method involves comparing target temperature of the glow plug (2,2a,2n) with current temperature (TGLP,curr) of the glow plug. The actual temperature of the glow plug is determined in response to a thermal balance of the glow plug and/or the area of ??the glow plug. The glow voltage of the glow plug is adjusted based on the modeled heat flow when the reference temperature (TGLP,Ref) of the glow plug is reached.
