PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine with cylinders that can be deactivated, with exhaust gas recirculation performed by variable control of intake valves, and a method for controlling the internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: Under operating conditions that do not require the maximum power of the engine and in which the fuel consumption is to be reduced, at least one part of engine cylinders are deactivated, and the fuel supply to the cylinders is interrupted. The intake valves (5) of the deactivated cylinders are kept open during at least one part of the discharge stages, and as a result, a part of the burnt gases generated in the deactivated cylinders flows into the respective intake conduits during the discharge stage of each cylinder. The intake valves (5) are closed simultaneously when the burnt gas remaining in each intake conduit returns to the cylinders in the successive intake stage, and before any substantial amount of fresh air starts getting into the cylinder. While the deactivated state is continued, the intake valves of the deactivated cylinders are further kept closed while the deactivated state is continued, and during the compression stage and the expansion stage in each deactivated cylinder.
