摘要

Over the years the Air Force has performed air base ground defense during war and other contingencies; the Persian Gulf war provides the most recent example. And of course we continue to need security police who have ground combat skills. As part of the 31 Initiatives signed in 1984 by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force, the two services agreed to coordinate ground combat. Part of this agreement included the transfer of Air Force training of ground combat skills to the Army. The idea made sense. The U.S. Army has the personnel, the resources, and a distinguished record in training infantry, including the kind of training that supports air base ground defense. The text traces the sometimes controversial development of air base ground defense training from World War II to the present arrangement with the Army. And the story will continue with the impending move of the training from Fort Dix to Fort Benning.
