CORNET: The Continuity Research Network: Development of the Infrastructure of a National Pediatric Practice-Based Research Network Final rept. (Sept. 30, 2002-Sept. 29, 2004)

The Continuity Research Network of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association (CORNET) infrastructure was developed to facilitate achieve the network goals to investigate the health and healthcare of minority and underserved children, to examine healthcare disparities, and to study resident education in primary care by comparing practice behavior to those in private practices while introducing residents to primary care research initiatives. In view of these goals the following network structure was developed: a 5 member Steering Committee; an Executive Committee comprising 11 Regional Research Chairs; rules of governance; mechanisms for network recruitment; protocols for the development of potential research studies; and strategies for ongoing communication and dissemination of research results. This process resulted in an overall enrollment of sixty-two pediatric training institutions with 78 clinical sites, an increase of 34 institutions from the onset of the grant. Enrollment data confirm that the majority of patients at these sites represent underserved and low income populations. Evidence of network research productivity includes the development of 2 manuscripts, one published and the second submitted. Two additional completed research studies have resulted in a platform presentation at the 2004 Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Meeting during the APA Presidential Plenary session and three submitted abstracts for consideration for the 2005 PAS meeting.
