Contribution of Cropping Systems Program Research and Extension to the Rural Poor: A Case Study of Ratnanagar Cropping Systems Site

The multiple cropping systems used by the Ratnanagar Village of Nepal are described. Using a household study methodology, data were collected via a pretested interview schedule and records and documents of the cropping system program were reviewed. Data were analyzed qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The multiple cropping index and land utilization index for all land types were computed. Results provide insights into the socioeconomic characteristics of respondents, cropping patterns on a variety of upland and lowland areas, and use of improved crop varieties, irrigation, chemical fertilizers, and plant protection measures. Results also shed light on livestock practices and farmers' responses to cropping system programs.
