Status of integrated strawberry production practices within Europe in relation to IOBC standards

The status of sustainable (organic, IP) strawberry production in Europe was surveyed. The extent of IP in Europe ranges from <10 percent up to 80 percent of the total production area. In some countries organic strawberry production has reached a level of 4-6 percent. While rules for organic strawberry production are regulated by the EU-directive 2092/91, the IOBC guideline for the Integrated Production of Soft Fruits should serve as a framework for the formulation of national IP-guidelines. The survey revealed that national IP guidelines diverge from the IOBC standards concerning the classification of certain pesticide groups as well as in the implementation of preventive measures. It concludes that - in order to expand the area of sustainable strawberry production in Europe - there is still a need for research and development in the management of many pests and diseases. Examples are: developing alternatives to broad spectrum insecticides (e.g. pyrethroids) and fungicides (e.g. benzimidazols), finding substitutes for residual herbicides, improving and implementing production systems that do not require the wide-spread use of soil sterilisation and implementing sensitive and specific detection methods for pathogens in propagation plants.
