Career paths in physicians' postgraduate training

The cluster analysis revealed four distinct career paths: (1) career in practice, (2) hospital career, (3) academic career, (4) changing career goal. The majority of physicians had made their career choice by halfway through their residency (3rd to 4th year of residency) and were assigned to cluster 1 to 3 (n = 218, 61%). However, a considerable number of physicians (n = 140, 39%) belonged to the cluster with changing career goal (4).
