Preparation and properties of oligomers containing cyclopentadithiophene

Spiro(2-alkyl-4H-cyclopenta(2,1-b;3,4-b)dithiophene-4,2'-(1,3)dioxalan) was dimerized by a Cu(II)-mediated oxidative coupling reaction. Acidic deprotection gave the carbonyl dimer as a purple solid. Absorption spectra of these dimers show a large red shift (about 110 nm for both dimers) compared to their monomers. Oxidation potentials of the dimers are considerably lower than that of the monomers.
