The Evolving Spectrum of Standards Development Processes

SDOs must adapt to the dramatic changes affecting an increasingly global economy. These changes are being driven by such trends as widespread market and technology convergence, an ever more competitive business environment, and the growing presence of developing nations in the standards world. Early recognition of these and other trends have catalyzed change within IEEE, which has made great strides in preparing to meet the new demands placed on SDOs with respect to how they operate in creating technical standards. This has involved an ongoing process of self-examination that challenges the status quo. The understandings gained have led to unprecedented steps that are renewing the organization. For example, IEEE-SA is working to strengthen its procedures in order to safeguard against anticompetitive behavior and to further clarify and evolve its IP policies. IEEE-SA is strengthening its ties to other SDOs, especially those that develop international technical standards, to foster the efficient creation of global standards in such fast-moving fields as information technology, communications, and nanotechnology.
