A reaudit of the management of syphilis in pregnancy in a large inner London hospital

British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) guidelines recommend that pregnant women with a positive syphilis test should be referred to genitourinary medicine (GUM); first-line treatment should be used where possible, and management should be in close liaison with obstetricians, midwives and paediatricians.1 In 2006, we audited our management of syphilis in pregnancy. Following the audit, a weekly registrar-led syphilis clinic was introduced. The new pathway involved liaison between: infectious diseases midwife, GUM consultant and registrar, neonatal consultant and the laboratory.
