摘要

In the last 10 years we have witnessed considerable advances in the understanding of the biology of central nervous system development. Although initially these advances addressed basic developmental mechanisms in animal models, we have recently begun to see considerable progress in understanding the genetics of disorders of brain and spinal cord development in our patients. The diversity of this topic is highlighted in this series of excellent review articles for this issue of Seminars in Pediatric Neurology. In addition to progress in genetics, we have seen important insights derived from using advanced imaging tools to both understand clinical outcomes and provide a window into basic mechanisms. Although still a field in its early stages, it is possible that these advances will not only inform our understanding of these and related disorders but also that these discoveries can serve as the foundation for designing rational therapeutics.
