EVALUATION OF CASHEW VARIETIES UNDER BHUBANESWAR CONDITION FOR MAJOR PLANT CHARACTERS AND NUT YIELD

Twenty high yielding selections/hybrids developed at different Cashew Research Stations have been studied under agro-climatic condition of Bhubaneswar (Orissa) during 2000-01. The vegetative, flowering, yield and yield attributing characters were studied, in the eight year old plantation. The maximum plant height (7.53m) was recorded in Vengurla-2 and minimum (2.64m) in Vridhachalam-2. Number of flowering laterals/panicles per m2 was maximum (24.88) in Vridhachalam-2 and minimum (11.62) in BPP-3. Thesex ratio varied from 0.10 in [hargram to 1.12 in Vridhachalam-2. The variety Vengurla-2 recorded significantly higher (6.4) number of nuts/panicle followed by Madakkathara-1 (5.32). The nuts of Vengurla-3, NRCC-2, Dhana, BPP-8, 320 and Vengurla-4 mademore than 7.5gm. The shelling per cent was (32.0) in Vengurla 3. The average nut yield varied from a minimum of 1.23 kg/plant (Jhargram-l) to a maximum of 11.60 Kg/plant in BPP-8 followed by Dhana (9.95kg/plant). The variety BPP-8 and Dhana with higher yield of 2320 and 1990 kg/ha were found suitable for cultivation under Orissa conditions.
