摘要

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) was first introduced into Goa by the Portuguese from where it spread to other parts of the cot-intry. Its introduction was mainly as a crop for afforestation and soil binding to check erosions. Besides nut, apple andother byproducts of this crop are of commercial importance. The commercial exploitation of cashew has begun in the early 60's of 20th century, considering its nutritive value in human health and socio economic welfare of rural mass. The early parts of its introduction marginal and denuded forests were the only areas set apart for the plantation development. The nonavailibility of high yielding varieties and multiplication techniques, indiscnpt seeds and seedlings were mainly used for plantation development. Because of its adaptive ability in wide range of agro climatic conditions and soil, it has become a crop of high economy and attained the status of an export oriented prime commodity contributing considerable foreign exchange to the country.
