Cashew (Anacardium Occidentale L.), a native of Brazil was introduced into India by Portuguese travelers in 16th century. India was the first country to export cashew kernels in early 1900's. Cashew is grown in several countries of the -world of whichIndia, Nigeria, Brazil and Vietnam are major producers. India's share in world production is presently 30% and enhancing our productivity is a sure means of retaining our premier. It was introduced and adopted as a soil conservation crop in the country.The area under cashew is 7.8 lakh ha with a productivity area of 6.83 lakh ha. The productivity of cashew is 800 kg/ha. There is demand of 12.0 lakh tones of raw cashewnuts in the processing sector. During 2004-05 India earned about Rs.2700 crores from26 countries of the world through kernel export and about Rs.7.03 crores by exporting cashewnut shell liquid.
