STATE LEVEL SEMINAR ON CASHEW IN GOA A REPORT

Shri. Ashwani Kumar, Secretary to Government of Goa, inaugurated the State Level Seminar on Cashew 2004-05 on 15th February 2005, at Porvorim, Goa, jointly organized by Directorate of Agriculture, Government of Goa and Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, Government of India. Speaking on the occasion Shri. Kumar said that cashew is cultivated in area of 8.00 lakhs hectare in the country with about 5.3 lakhs tones of raw nut production. He emphasized the need of hard work and use of new technologies to improve yield, which has tremendous demand both within and outside the country. The Secretary drew the attention to the threats from other developing countries in export of cashew. He stated that the global demands as well as internal demands of cashew are increasing and Government has evolved several programme for its development. The programme was organized for guiding the farmers for increasing the productivity in the State The present production of cashew is about 20,000 tonnes, which is about 400 kgs. per hectare. The need for increasing the production to 800 kgs. per hectare was highlighted in the seminar.
