When I first started gardening, I bought inexpensive cloth gloves, but I found they offered little protection against abrasive tasks. With use, these gloves stretched all out of proportion to my hand. I've also tried cowhide, pigskin, and buckskin gloves; they offer good protection but feel clumsy. So it gave me great satisfaction to learn about goatskin gloves made by the Haupt family, third-generation glove makers. Ninety-two years ago, the present owner's grandfather started Green Mountain Glove Company in Randolph, Vermont. Twenty-five years ago, I bought a pair of their handmade gloves. I've never looked back.
