Techniques of breeders seed production in rice were compared using the cultivar IR 36. With!n each of the eight techniques employed, a population of twenty three progenies was grown in a group balanced block design with three replications and observation recorded for 13 quantitative characters. Parameters used to determine the efficiency of each technique were the coefficient of variation, range variation and the number of progenies within a population that deviated significantly from its respective population mean for all the metric traits. For most traits, breeders seed progenies derived on a panicle basis from selected bagged plants, exhibited lowest genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variability and deviated than those progenies generated on a whole plant basis from selected unbagged plants, which is the method currently used for the production of breeders seed of pure lines. The implications of these results for the production of breeders seed in rice are discussed.
