Inheritance of amylose content in hybrid rice was studied in two kinds of cross combinations (low X high and intermediate X high amylose content) using five parental lines. Single-grain basis analysis carried out in the parental, F1 and F2 seed. Theinheritance of amylose content was found to be under the control of one major gene. The oligogenic nature of inheritance suggested the use of bulk population or backcross breeding for improvement of amylose content in the parental lines. Care in the selection of the parental lines in hybrid rice breeding, especially for quality traits, is highlighted.
