A set of twenty traditional/improved rice varieties adapted to mid-hill conditions of Himachal Pradesh were crossed with V20A to identify maintainers and restorers for this cytoplasmically male sterile line with a view to developing early maturing heterotic hybrids. The F1s and parents were evaluated for pollen viability, spikelet fertility, grains/panicle and yield/plant at two locations (Palampur and Malan). On the basis of spikelet fertility and pollen viability, the traditional varieties Phul Patas 72 and Ram Jawain 100, were identified as effective maintainers, and four genotypes (HPU2216, HPU741, IR41985 and VL42) as effective restorers. Only two crosses, V20A/HPU2216 and V20A/HPU741, exhibited significant positive heterosis for grain yield/plant.
