Studies of the surface layers of the titanium alloy VT3-1 following laser hardening and alloying using powders of different compositions are conducted. It is established that the hardened ' layer has hardness 1.1-1.8 times higher than the starter metal. This is due to the concentration and morphological heterogeneity of the solid solutions, the formation of a highly dispersed martensite phase alpha', saturation of the alloy with atmospheric nitrogen and carbon and coatings, which is confirmed by data of X-ray structure analysis. It is shown that use of laser alloying of the surface layers of titanium articles using powders of Al_2O__3 or T15K6 is an effective technique if it is necessary to significantly increase the basic operating properties (hardness, strength).
