The historical stages of development of furnaces in various technical areas and creation of the theory of furnaces, starting with the works of M. V. Lomonosov and including the works of prominent scientists V. E. Grum-Grzhimailo and M. A. Glinkov, are briefly examined. Views on the future development of the general theory of furnaces in the 21st century are expressed.
