Thermodynamic investigations established that oxidation of lead sulfide by gaseous oxygen is a complex heterogeneous process, the characteristics of which are determined by the temperature and oxygen content in the system. When oxygen is lacking the oxidation products are metallic lead and its mixture with oxide or sulfide. Intermediate products PbO centre dot PbSO_4 and 2PbO centre dot PbSO_4 play a considerable role in the formation of the end products. The presence of the CO_2 gas phase shifts the start of the series of reactions toward lower temperatures.
