Canada exports and imports less hazwaste and hazardous recyclables, says Environment Canada

Ottawa, ON-Canadian imports of hazardous waste and hazardous recyclables continue to fall, according to new figures from Environment Canada. In 2001, imports of hazardous wastes and hazardous recyclables totaled 500,000 tonnes, down from 560,000 tonnes in 2000. The import figure represents less than 10 per cent of hazardous waste and hazardous recyclables generated in Canada. Imports for disposal had increased in 1998 and 1999, with Canada's comparatively lax hazwaste landfilling standards believed to be the primary reason. A number of those standards have been or are in the process of being tightened.
