Ten provenances of Acacia nilotica were screened in chloride- and sulfate-dominated salinities in a screenhouse. The reduction in growth under salinity was accompanied by the decline in relative water content, leaf water potential and osmotic potential in provenances in Haryana, India. Nutrient contents in plant parts were reduced up to 50-75% by the presence of salt ions. In contrast, Na, Mg, SO4 and Cl were prominently increased up to 3 folds. Growth was reduced but maximum effect was found at EC16 dS/m in weight, leaf area, leaf water potential, osmotic potential and relative water content as salinity level is increased.
