EFFECT OF CUTTING FREQUENCIES ON THE FORAGE PRODUCTION AND QUALITY OF TWO YEARS OLD GOLDEN TIMOTHY (SETARIA SPHACELATA)

Effect of five cutting frequencies on growth, yield, seasonal distribution and quality of Setaria sphaceafa cv. PSS-1 was studied on two years old established pasture at HPKV, Palampur, during 1993 and 1994. The cutting frequencies affected plant height, number of shoots per tussock, tussock diameter, green and dry matter yield and crude protein content significantly during both the years. Cutting at 40 and 50 days interval produced statistically similar but significantly higher forage yield than other intervals. Forty days interval, however, proved superior to 50 days in term of quality and seasonal distribution.
