Agroforestry system of Jatropha curcas and Arachis hypogaea.

A field experiment was carried out during the summer season of 2006 and 2007 at the Student's Instructional farm, C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, to study the intercropping of summer groundnut with Jatropha curcas. The distance between two rows of Jatropha and summer groundnut rows was maintained 62.5 cm from both the sides Jatropha rows. Eight groundnut varieties (i.e., NRCG 7150, JL 24, BG 95, NRCG 12082, TG 26, NRCG 2063, ICGV 93468 and Dh 86) were tested. Among these varieties, Dh 86 and ICGV 93468 recorded significant higher yield by 1.85 and 1.84 t/ha, respectively in the companion cropping system of Jatropha + summer groundnut. Cultivar JL 24 used as check variety gave yield by 0.72 t/ha in the filler cropping system. The order of varietal performance was: Dh 86 (1.75 t/ha) and ICGV 93468 (1.84 t/ha) > NRCG 2063 (0.79 t/ha)> NRCG 12082 (0.74 t/ha)> TG 26 (0.73 t/ha)> JL 24 (0.72 t/ha) > BG 95 (0.72 t/ha) and NRCG 7150 (0.72 t/ha) in agroforestry of Jatropha + summer groundnut. The cultivars yielded higher pod yield gave lowest haulm yield while higher haulm harvested with lower yield varieties. Cultivar Dh 26 gave lowest haulm yield of 1.08 t/ha while NRCG 2063 yielded maximum haulm (1.39 t/ha). This was due to genetic variability of genotypes.
