摘要

Lucerne or alfalfa is one of the most important forage crops in India. It is highly palatable and nutritious to the cattle. However, the genetic improvement utilizing conventional methods are restricted because of uncontrolled pollination and inbreeding depression. The major problem with lucerne cultivation is the damage caused by lucerne weevil (Hypera postica). Genetic transformation of lucerne with Bt gene(s) has been suggested as an effective method of controlling the damage caused by lucerne weevil. A prerequisite for the development of Bt transgenic lucerne is the identification of Bt gene effective against lucerne weevil, a coleopteran insect. We found Cry3Aa and Cry1Ia5 proteins to be effective against lucerne weevil, therefore cry3Aa gene may be used for the development of Bt transgenic lucerne for weevil management.
