Variability in straw quality of rice cultivars in India.

This study was conducted to determine the nutritional variability of 1200 samples of 49 rice cultivars from 120 fields in nine major rice-producing states (Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttrakhand, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu) of India. Results revealed that the grain to straw ratio (1:0.73 to 1:1.78) had significant (P<0.01) regional and variety variations. Chemical composition of the different rice cultivars were significantly (P<0.05) different among varieties. The NDF and ADF contents of different rice varieties varied from 74.59 to 63.99% and 35.68 to 52.00%, respectively. The lignin and CP contents of the different rice cultivars were 5.0-13.8% and 2.87- 4.86%, respectively. There was a high degree of variability in the In sacco DM degradability (44.8 to 55.0%) of the different cultivars. The ADF (r=0.86) and lignin (R2=0.73) contents were negatively (P<0.05) associated with its in sacco DM degradability, whereas it was positively correlated (R2=0.81) with hemicellulose. It is suggested that the differences in nutritional parameters among varieties can be utilized by plant breeders. Furthermore, farmers can take advantage of the variability of straw quality, and select varieties for planting that have higher grain production and better straw quality.
