Performance of single-cut forage Sorghum varieties.

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of different varieties of forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) from Haryana (HC-308 and HJ-513), Gujarat (SR-218) and Uttarankhand (Pant Chari-5) in order to determine a suitable variety that can replace the variety SL-44. These five varieties and SGL-87 variety were sown on 7 June 2006 at Ludhiana and on 17 July 2006 at Gurdaspur (Punjab, India). Analysis of variance revealed that four varieties, viz., HC-308, HJ-513, SR-218 and Pant Chari-5, gave significantly higher green forage yield than the check variety SL-44 at both locations. HC-308 gave the highest green forage yield of 491 q/ha. Cultivar HC-308 showed 53% increase in green forage yield over SL-44 check over two locations. Mean plant height of HC-308 (226 cm) was significantly higher than SL-44 (200 cm). Per day productivity of HC-308 was superior to SL-44. The cultivar HC-308 recorded 1.19 q/ha dry matter yield per day as compared to SL-44 (0.98 q/ha). Green forage yield per day of HC-308 was 4.5 q/ha as compared to 3.67 q/ha of SL-44. HC-308 was also nutritionally better than SL-44 as it had higher protein content (7.87%) as compared to SL-44 (5.68%).
