Evaluation of Stylosanthes scabra and S. seabrana germplasm for quality parameters.

The diverse germplasm of Stylosanthes scabra and Stylosanthes seabrana were evaluated for their biochemical composition affecting nutritive value. Data were recorded for crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), water soluble carbohydrate (WSC), cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and total ash. The biochemical composition of the different germplasm lines indicate that both species are good sources of protein. The WSC content was significantly higher in S. seabrana than the corresponding S. scabra germplasm lines. Structural carbohydrate fractions such as NDF, ADF, cellulose and hemicellulose content did not vary significantly between both species. The germplasm IG-357, IG-359 and IG-388 in S. scabra and IG-325 and IG-348 in S. seabrana appeared to posses excellent nutritive qualities, being rich in CP and low in lignin content.
