Strategic nutrient supplementation in berseem for higher biomass productivity and economic return under semiarid conditions.

A field experiment was conducted at the farmer's field at Avikanagar, Rajasthan, India, during winter seasons of 2001-02 and 2002-03, to investigate the effects of combined application of nitrogen and phosphorus with inoculation of Rhizobium and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB, Pseudomonas striata) on green fodder production and economic returns of berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum). The treatments comprised nine treatments: (T1) control; (T2) Rhizobium+PSB; (T3) PSB; (T4) 20 kg N+Rhizobium; (T5) 20 kg N+PSB; (T6) 30 kg P2O5/ha; (T7) 30 kg P2O5/ha+Rhizobium+PSB; (T8) 20 kg N+60 kg P2O5/ha; and (T9) 20 kg N+60 kg P2O5/ha+Rhizobium+PSB. The results revealed that plant height and number of branches/plant were influenced significantly by different treatments. The treatment 20 kg N+60 kg P2O5/ha+mixture of Rhizobium trifolii and PSB recorded the highest green fodder (65.45 t/ha), dry matter yield (16.98 t/ha) and protein content (19.71%). The highest mean net return (Rs. 54 426/ha and B:C ratio of 3.35) were obtained with 20 kg N+60 kg P2O5/ha+Rhizobium and PSB cultures..
