Documentation and evaluation of farm level traditional agroforestry systems, their constraints and prospects in Manipur.

Documentation and studies on composition, utilizable biomass and returns from existing traditional agroforestry systems are non-existent in Manipur, India. To fill this gap, this study investigated the choice of tree species of the farmers and its impact for successful implementation of agroforestry programmes in Manipur. All kinds (marginal, small, medium and large) of farmers practiced agrosilvicultural, silvihorticultural and silvopastoral agroforestry systems whereas agrosilvihorticultural system was practiced by medium and large farmers only. Parkia roxburghii [Parkia timoriana] and Pinus spp. were the most preferred forestry tree species in the valleys and hills respectively. The study also identifies the constraints in the development of agroforestry in Manipur and suggests ways to remove the constraints and realize the potential of agroforestry for sustainable land use in Manipur..
