A field trial was carried out at Central Research Farm, Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, during 1998-2001 to optimize the rates of nitrogen in grasses and phosphorus in berseem through adjustment in levels and the time of fertilizer application. Treatments consisted of three grasses viz., Setaria (Setaria sphacelata), guinea grass (Panicum maximum) and hybrid napier (Pennisetum purpureum x P. glaucum) each intercropped with berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) during winter, two fertilizer levels (full and 75% of the recommended) and three application time (full rate of nutrient just after cut, 3/4 just after cut + 1/4 20 days before next cut and 1/2 just after cut + 1/2 20 days before next cut). Among the grasses, hybrid napier yielded the highest green fodder, dry matter and crude protein followed by guinea grass. The 100% recommended dose of nutrients proved significantly superior. Application of nutrient as 34 just after cut + 14 20 days before next cut recorded higher yield than common recommendation of application of full dose just after cut. Hybrid napier-berseem sequence proved the best during all the three years of study..
