Genetic analysis of quality traits in genus Avena.

The genetic effects for digestible dry matter yield, forage crude protein percentage and groat protein percentage were studied in 3 Avena sativa (PLP1, PO22 and JHO822) accessions, one A. nuda accession (PLP9), and 6 crosses (PLP1 x JHO822, PLP1 x PO22, PLP1 x PLP9, JHO822 x PO22, JHO822 x PLP9, and PO22 x PLP9) grown in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, India, during the rabi season of 2000-01. For digestible dry matter yield, the additive-dominance model was suitable for all crosses. PLP1 x JHO822, PLP1 x PLP9 and JHO822 x PO22 showed mainly dominant gene effects, suggesting that selection for digestible dry matter yield should be delayed for the succeeding generations. In JHO822 x PLP9, significant but negative additive genetic effects were observed. Heterosis was significant and positive only in JHO822 x PO22. For forage crude protein content, the non-allelic interaction was significant in PLP1 x JHO822, PLP1 x PO22, PLP1 x PLP9 and JHO822 x PO22, whereas the additive-dominance gene model was adequate for the other crosses. Heterosis was significant and positive in PLP1 x JHO822 only. For groat protein content, the additive-dominance model was appropriate for PLP1 x JHO822, JHO822 x PO22 and JHO822 x PLP9. Non-allelic interaction was observed in the other crosses. Only PLP1 x JHO822 showed mainly additive genetic effects for this trait, suggesting the suitability of simple selection in early generations.
