Constraints faced by the farmers in tree planting under social forestry

The study was conducted with a sample of 150 farmers enrolled under the scheme of Tree Planting on Fallow Land of Social Forestry in Akola district of Maharashtra state. The results showed that majority of the farmers received the intended assistanceunder the scheme. Most of the farmers received the relevant literature, inputs like seed/stumps/plants and financial assistance in instalments. However, some farmers did not receive adequate technical guidance, fertilizers and insecticides. The majorityof the participant farmers expressed dissatisfaction with the procedure of providing assistance. The important constraints faced by them were; lack of technical knowledge, non co-operative attitude of villagers, problem of stray cattle and non availability of assistance in time. With a view to make the programme more effective it is suggested that the field level workers should provide all assistance in time and create awareness among villagers about the benefits of the programme.
