Fodder yield and nutritional attributes of ricebean (Vigna umbellata).

An experiment was conducted in Himachal Pradesh, India, during the 2005 kharif season to assess fodder production potential and nutritional status of diverse rice bean genotypes. Data were recorded for plant height, fresh fodder yield, days to 50% flowering, total carbohydrates, ascorbic acid and cell wall components (neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, lignin and hemicellulose). Data were also obtained for phenolics and tannins. The maximum plant height was observed in IC-137194. Plant height was significantly higher in 28 genotypes compared with the control. The maximum fresh fodder yield was recorded in IC-137200. The mean values of crude protein content of rice bean genotypes varied from 13.59 in IC-137188 to 18.92% in IC-137190. IC-137188, IC-137195, IC-137200, IC-140802 and IC-140803 showed significantly lower crude protein content compared to the control, however, the other genotypes were at par with the control. IC-137190 was promising for crude protein content (18.92%). The total soluble carbohydrate content in the genotypes varied from 7.33 (EC-48223-B) to 12.69% (IC-137188). The values for ascorbic acid content in the genotypes varied from 0.025 (IC-137195) to 0.041% (IC-016789). Eighteen genotypes exhibited significantly higher values of ascorbic acid content than the control. The mean values of ash content varied from 0.80 to 2.50%. Dhagwar had the highest ash content, whereas Panchrukhi exhibited the lowest. The mean crude fibre content ranged from 18.70 (Dhagwar and Panchrukhi) to 25.87% (IC-140808). Fifteen genotypes had significantly high crude fibre content.
