Seed germination studies in three pasture grass species grown in North India

The germination and dormancy of propagules of three pasture grass species were investigated. The species were Cenchrus ciliahs, Cenchrus setigerus and Panicum antidotale. Different accessions of the three species showed variation in germination percentage as well as dormancy under laboratory conditions. Dry heat treatment at 40 deg C for 10 days significantly improved germination in most of the accessions in these species. For laboratory germination test, pre drying of the propagules at 40 deg C for10 days and germination at 30 deg C in Between Paper (BP) media for Cenchrus spp. and Top of Paper (TP) media at 25 deg C for Panicum species was found suitable.
