Estimation of aerial biomass of Populus deltoides G_3 clones growing in agricultural fields

Poplar (Populus deltoides G_3) trees, grown in an agrisilviculture system with a spacing of 4.5 X 4.5 m and 5.4 X 10.8 m and all along the farm boundaries as a single row, were sampled to estimate biomass productivity. Detailed morphometric measurements for individual trees in five diameter classes were carried out. Equations were derived for estimating above-ground tree component dry weights. The mean dry/fresh weight ratios of different tree component increased with an increase in diameter class.Four variables based on diameter and height measurements (D_1 D~2, D~3 and D~2H) were tested as predictors for biomass. A polynomial model based on D~2 and D~3 provided the best estimate and a model based on only D~2H was nearly good.
