Response of three bamboo species to vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza inoculation in nursery.

A nursery experiment was carried out with four treatments consisting of control (T1), Phosphorus fertilization as SSP @ 15 g per seedling (T2), 20 g VAM inoculation per seedling (T3) and 40 g VAM inoculation per seedling (T4) replicated thrice to evaluate the response of three different species of bamboo seedlings i.e. Dendrocalamus strictus, Bambusa bambos, and B. vulgaris to VAM inoculation. The results revealed that the growth and biomass production of all the three species of bamboo were significantly higher when inoculated with VAM fungi than inorganic P fertilization while minimum was observed in control. Among the species, maximum growth was seen in B. vulgaris followed by D. strictus. The variation in growth and biomass in these bamboo species with time as affected by different treatments revealed that initially the effect of inorganic phosphorus fertilization was better but later on the effect of VAM inoculated treatments were significantly higher. In D. strictus and B. bambos highest growth was seen at 20 g VAM inoculation per seedling while in B. vulgaris the treatment of 40 g VAM inoculation per seedling showed better growth. Both the VAM inoculated treatments were at par and significantly effective in inducing higher biomass production, shoot length, number of culms per seedling over inorganic phosphorus fertilization and control. Inoculation of VAM fungi @ 20 g per 2 month old seedling may be given at nursery to produce higher growth and biomass in D. strictus, B. bambos, and B. vulgaris.
